Simon Evans in the Tankformers Subaru Impreza has won his fourth straight Scouts Rally SA, once again proving the class of the field in the Barossa Valley today.
In a day of high drama, Evans main rival Scott Pedder (Mitsubishi) was airlifted to hospital with leg injuries after hitting a tree on the day’s opening stage.
Co-driver Jon Mortimer was not hurt in the crash, but due to the location of the accident it was decided to transport Pedder via air. His condition has been listed as stable.
Evans along with co-driver, and wife, Sue was first on the scene and immediately stopped to raise the alarm. The stage was halted with a paramedic and trauma doctor on the scene within two minutes.
Evans put the incident aside and attacked the following stages to take the heat win and back up victory in yesterday’s section of the rally.
“It was an awesome weekend – from the roads to the organisation,” said Evans.
“My battle on Saturday with Scott was one of the best battles for ages. Sue was just awesome in the car- she’s an absolute rock.
“It’s not easy to win- and the championship is far from over.”
Second place went to Nathan Quinn and David Green (Allied Airconditioning Mitsubishi), with the Sachs Suspension Mitsubishi of Steven Shepheard and Steve O’Brien-Pounde in third.
The next stop on the Australian Rally Championship calendar is the International Rally of Queensland on the Sunshine Coast 31 July – 1 August. This event also doubles as a round of the Asia Pacific Rally Championship and will feature Australian International rally star Chris Atkinson and the factory Proton Satria team.
